Need New Year's
Housecleaning, Author Says
Free Stepparenting Ebook Offered
The new year: a time for parties, parades, and pigskin. Karon Phillips
Goodman, a best-selling stepparenting author, says it’s also a time for
housecleaning. She recommends that stepparents begin 2003 by throwing away
relics of the past, including:
- Jealousy – Stop
resenting the kids’ relationships with their other parent, or your
spouse’s relationship with an ex. Focus instead on building bonds within
your family.
- Pettiness – Look
past little annoyances that may lead to arguments and hurt feelings. Let go
of things that aren’t worth fighting over.
- Temper – Get rid
of short fuses. Goodman recommends that stepparents count to 10—or 46 or
5,012, if needed—then speak quietly and lovingly.
- Indecision –
Commit to your family, and other decisions will follow. “Making the choice
that helps your family grow is always the right decision,” says Goodman.
- Grudges – Holding
a grudge won’t change the person you’re angry with, but it will change you—for
the worse. You can’t heal when you’re holding onto anger.
- Hurry – Along with
the 2002 calendar, stepparents should throw out their timetable for becoming
a “real” family. “Blending can’t be hurried,” Goodman advises.
“Just let each day unfold and enjoy the opportunities it presents. That
takes the pressure off everyone.”
Goodman is
offering a free eighty-page ebook, “The Stepmom’s Sideroom and Other
Favorite Stories,” a collection of her advice for stepparents. For a copy,
send a blank email to stepmom@karongoodman.com.
